Vertical Bore VB420SF

Angle view of the Winona Van Norman Vertical Boring Machine showcasing the precision boring head, work table, and heavy-duty machine construction.

The Winona Van Norman VB Series Vertical Boring Machines are engineered to deliver the precision, durability, and efficiency required by today’s professional engine rebuilding shops. Designed specifically for automotive, diesel, industrial, agricultural, and high-performance engine applications, the VB Series combines industrial-grade construction with advanced engineering to provide superior accuracy over conventional boring bar systems while significantly reducing setup and machining time.

At the heart of every VB Series machine is a rigid stationary boring head paired with a precision movable worktable. This design minimizes deflection during machining, producing exceptionally accurate, round cylinder bores with outstanding surface finishes. Universal holding fixtures and a highly functional table allow operators to quickly position engine blocks, while side-to-side and fore-and-aft table travel make it easy to center each cylinder—even when the block is not mounted perfectly square. An integrated dial indicator further streamlines setup by ensuring precise cylinder alignment before every cut.

The VB Series offers fully adjustable spindle speeds and feed rates, allowing operators to optimize cutting performance, extend tool life, and maintain precise control over bore finish. These capabilities are especially beneficial for large overbores, where aggressive roughing cuts can minimize finishing passes while maintaining excellent machining accuracy. A micrometric manual feed provides precise depth control for counterboring cylinder sleeves, while adjustable automatic boring stops improve consistency and allow operators to perform other tasks during the machining cycle. Depending on the model, automatic or rapid boring head retraction further enhances productivity and workflow efficiency.

Built for years of dependable service, the Winona Van Norman VB Series delivers the accuracy, repeatability, and rugged performance machine shops rely on to produce high-quality engine rebuilds. Whether boring standard automotive engines or heavy-duty diesel blocks, the VB Series provides the precision and productivity needed to meet the highest standards of modern engine machining.

Product Information

The VB 420SF has infinitely variable spindle rotation, table traverse and boring feed. An added exclusive WVN feature is electronic DUAL AXIS VARIABLE SPEED movement of the table. This allows the operator to position the work piece with joystick controls on the control panel, dramatically reducing the effort required to center the spindle in cylinders for boring operation setup.
