Angle view of the Winona Van Norman LH3X Line Hone designed for precision honing of main bearing bores in automotive, diesel, and heavy-duty engine blocks.

The Winona Van Norman LH3X Line Honing Machine is a heavy-duty, precision-engineered solution designed for professional engine rebuilders who require accurate, consistent, and repeatable line honing of engine blocks. Built to restore and finish main bearing bores to the proper size, alignment, and surface finish, the LH3X provides the control and versatility needed for automotive, performance, diesel, and heavy-duty engine rebuilding applications.

The LH3X operates using precision honing mandrels, allowing the operator to hone the main bearing bore through the length of the engine block while maintaining proper alignment from one bore to the next. This mandrel-based honing process helps produce straight, accurately sized bore geometry necessary for proper bearing fit, oil clearance, crankshaft alignment, and dependable engine performance.

At the heart of the LH3X is a rugged chain-drive system that provides smooth, dependable movement throughout the honing process. A built-in buck stop helps prevent the operator from traveling outside the engine block, providing additional control over the mandrel’s working range. Combined with rigid construction and precision components, these features help create a controlled honing environment capable of delivering consistent results.

The LH3X features an adjustable engine block cradle that can be tilted and height adjusted to properly position a wide range of engine block sizes. This flexibility is especially beneficial when working with larger diesel and heavy-duty blocks that require additional clearance. V-block and straight-block parallels provide additional options for supporting and positioning blocks during setup, while linear guide bearings provide smooth, controlled movement and stability throughout operation.

Because the LH3X is designed around honing mandrels, several features simplify mandrel setup, support, and changeover. Multiple mandrel supports help keep tooling properly supported during operation and setup. For larger mandrels, an integrated motor latch allows the motor to swing out of the way, creating additional working space for easier loading and unloading. An optional holding rack can also provide a convenient location for organizing mandrels, tooling, and accessories near the machine.

An integrated gauge bracket gives operators a dedicated mounting location for measuring equipment, keeping important tooling accessible during setup and operation. This makes it easier to monitor bore size and material removal throughout the honing process and make adjustments necessary to achieve the desired finished dimensions.

Operator accessibility is another important part of the LH3X design. A swivel control box can be repositioned based on the engine block, mandrel, and operator location. The machine also incorporates a drive head and primary “deadman” switch for straightforward operator control. This arrangement keeps the operator actively engaged during honing while providing convenient control over mandrel movement through the engine block.

Fluid management is incorporated directly into the machine. Drainage trays on both sides help collect and manage honing oil during operation. Dedicated drainage tubes allow used mandrels to drain while another mandrel is installed and operating, helping reduce unnecessary downtime between jobs. An integrated screen also captures debris and contaminants before they can circulate through and clog the machine, supporting cleaner operation and helping protect the honing system.

Every feature of the Winona Van Norman LH3X is designed around the needs of professional engine rebuilding shops. From its mandrel-based honing system and chain drive to its adjustable cradle, linear guide bearings, multiple mandrel supports, swing-away motor, drainage system, swivel controls, and versatile block supports, the LH3X combines precision with practical functionality.

Whether working with automotive engine blocks, performance applications, diesel engines, or larger heavy-duty blocks, the Winona Van Norman LH3X Line Honing Machine provides the accuracy, flexibility, and durability required for demanding rebuilding operations. Its ability to accommodate a variety of engine blocks and honing mandrels gives shops the versatility to handle a broad range of work on one machine. For rebuilders seeking accurately aligned main bearing bores, proper bearing clearances, consistent surface finishes, and repeatable results, the LH3X delivers a complete line honing solution built for precision and long-term productivity.
